Can't Sit Still, Can't Wind Down: Movement, Attention & Sleep in ADHD
Two of the most common ADHD traits seem totally unrelated: the constant need to move, and the constant struggle to fall — or stay — asleep. But from a nervous system perspective, they're two sides of the same coin.
Movement and Attention Are Linked, Not Opposed
That "can't sit still" trait isn't separate from attention — it's often part of how an ADHD nervous system regulates itself. Movement activates the cerebellum and vestibular system, both of which play a major role in attention, impulse control, and sensory processing.
For a lot of kids and adults with ADHD, moving helps them think, rather than distracting from it. Fidgeting, pacing, tapping a foot, or needing to get up between tasks isn't misbehavior — it's the nervous system trying to self-regulate in real time.
This is a big mindset shift for a lot of parents and teachers: instead of asking "how do we stop the movement," a more useful question is "how do we support the movement so it works for focus instead of against it." Standing desks, movement breaks, fidget tools, and regular physical activity aren't accommodations — they're regulation tools.

Why Sleep Is So Hard to Get Right

Here's the connection: a dysregulated nervous system often can't shift smoothly from "alert" mode (sympathetic) into "rest and digest" mode (parasympathetic) at night. The body stays keyed up even when the mind is exhausted, which is why so many ADHD bedtimes involve a wired, resistant kid — or a wired, resistant adult — long after "lights out."
